Death of a Grundy Pioneer

In the passing of Mrs. Jacob Jaspers who died last Wednesday evening, Grundy county looses another of its pioneers. Mrs. Jaspers came to Grundy county 44 years ago and she resided here continuously up to the time of her death. Having been an invalid the greater share of the past six years and her health having become undermined her death was not unexpected. Funeral services conducted by Rev. Theilke were held here Saturday and owing to the wide acquaintance to the high regard in which the deceased was held the services were very largely attended.

Mrs. Jaspers maiden name was Marie Hagen. She was born in Greetsiel, Eastfriesland, Germany August 13th, 1845, making her nearly 68 years old at the time of her death. She came to this county with her parents in 1869. The following year she was married to Jacob Jaspers. The family made their home on a farm in this township on which they lived until ten years ago when they moved to town to make their home here. Mrs. Jaspers husband preceded her to the land beyond six years and six months. There were nine children to the Jaspers family. Eight of these are living. They are S. J. and Harm, Mrs. W. E. Knock, Mrs. D. Smidt, Mrs. D. J. Peters, Mrs. Henry Primus, Mrs. Martin Thomas and Mrs. John Neessen. All but Mrs. Smidt reside in this county. She lives at Titonka. One brother, A. Hagen from Oklahoma who survives Mrs. Jaspers was here at the funeral. Since the death of her husband Mrs. Jaspers has been making her home with her daughter Mrs. Martin Thomas.
