Wellsburg Loses Good Booster

S. J. Snittjer Died Yesterday Forenoon

S. J. Snittjer died at his home in Wellsburg yesterday forenoon at eleven o'clock. He had been sick about a month. For two weeks doctors pronounced his case hopeless.

The funeral will be at Wellsburg Monday afternoon.

Mr. Snittjer was about forty-eight years old. Nearly all of his life was spent in northwest Grundy.

Mr. Snittjer's death removes one of the most aggressive and influential business men from the town of Wellsburg. He was a booster and a builder. Much of Wellsburg's splendid growth within recent years was due to Mr. Snittjer's activities. Mr. Snittjer's family consists of a wife, one son and one daughter.

Obituary

Sam Snittjer died Wednesday, Nov. 18th, 1914, at his home in Wellsburg.

Mr. Snittjer was 46 years old, born in Ogle county, Illinois, and moved with his parents to Grundy county, Iowa, in 1869, and been a resident of this community all his life.

On March 12, 1890, he was married to Miss Gertie Geerdes, who survives him. Besides his widow he leaves a son and daughter, John and Miss Gertie, His father, John Snittjer, two brothers, Herman and John, and two sisters, Mrs. Henry Peters and Mrs. Charley Schmidt, all residents of this vicinity.

In 1909 he removed from the farm to town and engaged in the butcher business, until two years ago when his son John took charge of the market.

Funeral occurred Monday afternoon, Nov. 23rd, and was one of the most largely attended funerals ever held in Grundy County.

Services were conducted at both the house and the church by the Rev. Theilken and Rev. Drake, and interment was made in the Wellsburg cemetery.

Pall bearers were: D. J. Peters, D. Claassen, H. B. Koolman, D. J. Riekena, Ben Lindaman and O. B. Eells.

Out of respect to the memory of the departed, all business places were closed from 1 to 3 o'clock.

The following resolution of sympathy and respect were passed by the City Council, last Thursday evening:
Whereas,
There has passed from among us our fellow worker and esteemed friend,
S. J. Snittjer,
And Whereas, we deeply feel the loss thus sustained by his family, by the Town Council, as well as the Community at large, therefore,
Be it Resolved, That we extend our sympathy and sincere condolences to the bereaved family,
And be it further resolved, that this resolution be spread on the records of the Town of Wellsburg, and that it be published in the Wellsburg Herald.
