Herman B. Hook, Longtime Area Businessman, Is Dead

Herman B. Hook, 67, well known Wellsburg, Grundy Center and Reinbeck businessman, died at 10:30 p.m. Sunday at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo following a lingering illness.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Wellsburg Reformed Church with Rev. Gideon Wolbrink officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Special music during the service was provided by vocalists Mrs. Woodrow Lindaman and Mrs. Elmer Ruter, and organist Miss Marcella Neessen.

Casket bearers were Paul Hook, Alfred Albers, Steven Hook, Johannes Messter, Robert Meester and Roy Groote.

Mrs. David Taffinder and Mrs. Tyle Huisman were in charge of flowers. Arrangements were by Doyen Funeral Home.

He was born on a farm in Shiloh township, southeast of Wellsburg on December 13, 1904, the son of Ben and Maggie (Lutterman) Hook.

He graduated from the Wellsburg high school in 1924. He attended Ellsworth College in Iowa Falls and the University of Iowa at Iowa City.

On September 21, 1929, he was united in marriage to Miss Leola Lindaman at the Wellsburg Reformed Church Parsonage by the Rev. William Landsiedel. Following their marriage they made their home in Buckeye where they were engaged in the grocery business for several years. This union was blessed with two daughters and one son.

In 1944 the family moved to Wellsburg where Herman became associated in the Haack and Hook Store. While a Wellsburg businessman, he was active in civic affairs, serving on the local school board, community club and town council. In 1955 he opened a grocery store in Grundy Center and in 1961 he opened the Hook Grocery Store in Reinbeck.

He was a member of the Wellsburg Reformed Church, having made confession of his faith in Jesus Christ on November 16, 1941.

Those who preceded him in death are his parents, 1 sister, Mrs. Regina DeNeui and 1 brother, Gerald Hook.

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Leola; two daughters: (JoAnne), Mrs. James Duwelius of Grundy Center; (Linda), Mrs. Frank Chandler of Rochelle, Ill.; one son, Jack Hook of Waterloo; 5 grandchildren; 3 sisters and 2 brothers: (Grace), Mrs. William M. Ross of Grundy Center; (Alene), Mrs. Roy Huddleston of Sun City Center, Fla.; Lester Hook of Waterloo; (Gertrude), Mrs. Frank Ornduff of Terre Haute, Ind.; Benjamin Hook of Wellsburg and a host of other relatives and friends.
