Herman Ruter, Lifelong Area Resident, Dead

Herman E. Ruter passed away around 5:30 Friday afternoon, September 14, 1979, at the Marshalltown Area Community Hospital in Marshalltown. He reached the age of 81 years, 7 months and 28 days.

He was born on a farm in Shiloh Township, southeast of Wellsburg, on January 16, 1898, the son of Eike and Trientje (Luppen) Ruter. He attended the rural school in the area. On July 30, 1924, he was united in marriage to Etta Stoehr. Following their marriage they lived on a farm southwest of Wellsburg and later moved to their farm southeast of Wellsburg. In 1956 they retired from the farm and moved to Wellsburg to make their home. This union was blessed with three children.

They were privileged to celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary on July 30, 1974, with their family and friends.

Mr. Ruter was baptized in the First Christian Reformed Church of Wellsburg in 1898. He was confirmed and became a member of the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Wellsburg in 1937, and became a member of the Wellsburg Reformed Church by letter of transfer on June 9, 1946. He was a long-time member of the Men's Brotherhood of the church, was the church janitor for three years and for many years was the head usher.

Preceding him in death were: his parents, one brother, Fred Ruter, 2 sisters, one in infancy and (Grace), Mrs. John J. Meyer.

Those left to mourn his passing are: his wife, Etta, 2 sons and 1 daughter, Elmer J. Ruter of Wellsburg; Eugene Ruter of Wellsburg; (Erma), Mrs. Duane Meyer of Marshalltown; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; 10 brothers and sisters, Peter Ruter of Wellsburg; Mrs. Lena Heinrich of Wellsburg; (Jessie), Mrs. Ebe Finke of Wellsburg; Mrs. Gertie Riekens of Wellsburg; (Emma), Mrs. Roy deNeui of Wellsburg; Eike Ruter of Wellsburg; Alice Ruter of Wellsburg; John E. Ruter of Wellsburg; Mrs. Edith Beck of Des Moines; (Hilda), Mrs. Delbert B. Lindaman of Wellsburg and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Monday, September 17, 1979 at 1:30 p.m. at the Wellsburg Reformed Church. Clergymen were Rev. Gideon Wolbrink and Rev. Edward Jurgens. Soloist was C. Robert White. Organist was Miss Marcella Neessen. Flower attendants were Mrs. Herman Stahl and Mrs. Elwin Harms. Pallbearers were Gerald Meyer, Leland Heinrich, Douglas Lindaman, Kerwin Strasser, Kenneth Van Hauen, and Irwin Abels. Honorary pallbearers were Dennis Lynch, Jon Fisher, Curtis Beck and Robert Beck. Interment was held in the Wellsburg Reformed Church Cemetery. Doyen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
