Otta Tjaden, Lifelong Area Resident, Dead
Otta Tjaden passed away Saturday morning, October 18, 1980, at the Eldora Manor Care Center in Eldora due to complications of advanced age. He reached the age of 92 years and 28 days. He had been a resident of the Care Center since June 2, 1980.
Funeral services were held on Monday, October 20, 1980 at 1:30 p.m. at the Wellsburg Reformed Church. Officiating were Pastor Roger Huitink and Rev. Gideon Wolbrink. Mrs. Edwin Behrends and Mrs. Bernard A. Engelkes sang two selections accompanied by Marcella Neessen, organist. Flower attendants were Mrs. John Heinrich and Mrs. Arnold Boekhoff. Pallbearers were Robert Tjaden, Gordon Tjaden, Richard Claassen, Wendell Hoekstra, Mayo Tjaden and John Schalk. Interment was held in the Wellsburg Reformed Church Cemetery. Doyen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Tjaden was born in Wellsburg on September 20, 1888, the son of John and Dorcas (Huisman) Tjaden. He received his education in the Wellsburg Grade School and later attended Grundy Center High School. On January 8, 1908, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Akkerman. Following their marriage they lived in Wellsburg and then moved to a farm north of Wellsburg. In 1930 they moved back to Wellsburg where he was the Town Marshal, later worked for Grundy County, and his last employment was with the Iowa Highway Commission. Mrs. Tjaden passed away on October 2, 1956.
He was a member of the Wellsburg Reformed Church having joined by confession of faith on July 6, 1976.
Preceding him in death were: his parents, his wife, Elizabeth; one brother, Meint Tjaden; two sisters, Pearl Tjaden, Mrs. Albert (Anna) Meyer; and an infant sister.
Survivors include: one son, John Tjaden of the Presbyterian Home in Ackley; one daughter, Mrs. Woodrow (Luella) Lindaman of Wellsburg; three grandchildren, Robert Tjaden of Hemet, California, Gordon Tjaden of Sparta, Wisconsin, Mrs. E. A. (Lila Le) Mauri of San Diego, California; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Elsie Peters of Wellsburg, Mrs. Minnie Dilly of Aplington and many other relatives and friends.
