Services For Odie Olthoff On Wednesday

Funeral services for Odie Olthoff were held on Wednesday, October 30, at 1:30 p.m. at the Wellsburg Reformed Church. Pastor Roger Huitink officiated at the service.

Pastor and Mrs. Huitink sang two selections, "Where the Roses Never Fade" and "Jesus Is Always There." The accompanist was Miss Marcella Neessen, who played the prelude and postlude.

Mrs. W.D. Murray and Mrs. Elwin Harms were flower attendants.

Casketbearers were Curt Olthoff, Craig Olthoff, Ron Heim, Dave Mundt, Leslie Smit and David Heronimus. The interment service was held in the Wellsburg Reformed Church cemetery.

The Doyen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Olthoff passed away at 2:35 a.m. Monday, October 28 at the Long Term Care Unit of the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center due to complications of advanced age. He reached the age of 92 years and 9 months.

He was born January 28, 1893, on a farm in Colfax township, northeast of Wellsburg, the son of John and Lena (Reufsaat) Olthoff. He received his education in the rural school in the area.

On June 22, 1916, he was married to Sadie Berends at the parsonage of the Wellsburg Reformed Church by the Rev. William Landsiedel. Following their marriage they lived on a farm southeast of Wellsburg. This union was blessed with a son, John, and a daughter, Minnie. In 1946 they retired from the farm and moved to Wellsburg to make their home. They were married for over 69 years.

Mrs. Olthoff became a resident of the Long Term Care Unit in 1980 and Odie continued to make his home in Wellsburg until July of 1982, at which time he became a resident of the Long Term Care Unit.

He was a long-time member of the Wellsburg Reformed Church, having joined by confession of faith on May 15, 1932.

Preceding him in death were his parents, his daughter, Minnie, his son-in-law, Alvin Smit; 3 brothers, Andrew, Ude and Johann Olthoff; 3 sisters, Mrs. Clara Gossell, Mrs. Anna Paterni and Mrs. Lena Schmidt.

Survivors include his wife, Sadie, his son, John and daughter-in-law, Deloris of Wellsburg; 5 grandchildren, Curtis Olthoff of Sioux City; Craig Olthoff of Iowa Falls; Mrs. Jane Heim of Ralston, NE; Mrs. Pat Mundt, Treynor; Leslie Smit of Denver, CO; 10 great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
