W. D. Murray Services Held

W. D. Murray, who had served Iowa education for a total of 36 years, passed away July 8 at Allen Memorial Hospital.

William Dale Murray was born, October 8, 1907, in Reinbeck, attended elementary schools in Toledo, Waterloo, and LaPorte City and graduated from Lamont High School. He was a graduate of Iowa State Teachers College and received his M.S. degree in education from the State University of Iowa where he was a member of Phi Delta Kappa.

Mr. Murray began his career as teacher and coach of boys' athletics in Cincinnati, IA in 1939. He was high school principal at Shell Rock 1941-1950, superintendent at New Providence 1950-1963, and at Wellsburg from 1963-1972. He then became Hardin County Superintendent of Schools and continued in that position until his retirement in 1975.

Mr. Murray served both the Iowa High School Athletic Association and the Iowa High School Girls' Athletic Union as a member of their Representative Councils. In 1990 he was a recipient of the Administrator Award voted by the IHSAA Board of Control.

He was a Past Master of the Shell Rock Masonic Lodge, a member of the Wellsburg Community Club and an elder of the Wellsburg Reformed Church.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, the former Thelma Jayne; a daughter, Linda Murray Reece of Fayetteville, NY; a son, William A. Murray of Harrisburg, NC; six grandchildren; two brothers, Milo of Lamont and Dwight of Washington and three sisters, Ila Helms of Lamont, Arlene Phillips of Delhi and Berna Deane Benter of Oelwein; and a sister-in-law Beryl Weber of Independence, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Rollin, Arlo and Don.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 14, 1992 at Wellsburg Reformed Church in Wellsburg with Pastor Verlyn Boone officiating.

Pall bearers were Roger Horn, Walter Block, Robert Valentine, Bob Rodgers, Doug Williams and James Alexander.

Honorary pall bearers were Bo Breneman and Ross Galloway.

Interment was in the Wellsburg Reformed Church Cemetery, Wellsburg.

Doyen-Abels Funeral Home, Wellsburg was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
