Rites Held For Gideon Wolbrink

Gideon Wolbrink, 82, of Wellsburg, passed away on Tuesday, November 24, 1998, at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley of natural causes.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, November 28, at 10:30 a.m. at the Wellsburg Reformed Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Full military graveside rites were conducted by Wellsburg Amvets Post 91 and American Legion Post #213. Pastor Kevin Ver Hoeven officiated.

Pallbearers were John Krull, Royce Paterni, Larry Bausman, Dave Winjum, Edward Christians and Edwin Behrends.

A memorial fund has been established.

Gideon was born on July 26, 1916, in Stickney, South Dakota, the son of Jacob and Hattie (Brouwer) Wolbrink. He graduated from Stickney High School in 1936 and attended Central College in Pella, graduating in 1949. Gideon earned a Masters of Divinity degree at Western Seminary in Holland, Michigan.

He served as a First Lieutenant in the infantry during World War II. He received a Purple Heart with one Oak Leaf Cluster. He was also one of twenty-five American Officers to be honored with the British Military Cross, awarded for gallantry in action.

On January 15, 1944, he was united in marriage to Lorraine Barickman in the Immanuel Methodist Church in Des Moines. He served churches in Litchville and Marion, North Dakota, for eight years and Erie, Illinois, for eight years before moving to Wellsburg in 1963, and retiring from the ministry in 1979. Gideon was a member of the Wellsburg Reformed Church and the American Legion in Wellsburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Richard, Charles, William, Garrit and John; and one sister, Nellie Dykstra.

Survivors include his wife, Lorraine of Wellsburg; son, Paul Wolbrink and wife Vivian of Spring Lake, Michigan; three daughters, Janie Koopmans and husband Rodney of St. Croix, Virgin Islands, Harriet Wolbrink and husband Joseph Rankin of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Martha Schultz and husband Michael of Maple City, Michigan, one brother, Jacob Wolbrink and wife Eltha of Stickney, South Dakota; two sisters, Katie Dykshorn and Sarah DeBoer and husband Orville, all of Corsica, South Dakota; six grandchildren; and four sisters-in-law.

The Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg was in charge of the arrangements.
