Leonard Schmidt, 96, of Wellsburg, passed away on Friday, January 29, 1999, at the Maple Manor Care Center in Aplington of natural causes.
Funeral services were held on Monday, February 1, at 11 a.m. at the Wellsburg Reformed Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Pastor Kevin Ver Hoeven officiated. A memorial fund has been established.
Pallbearers were Eric Huisman, Clarence and Harley Freese, Kenny Bunger, Jerry Eberline and Neil Okones.
Leonard was born on April 9, 1902, on a farm south of Wellsburg the son of Carl and Lena (Snittjer) Schmidt. He attended country school Melrose #1 and Ellsworth College. On March 11, 1926, he was united in marriage with Maria (Mary) Maas in the St. Paul's Lutheran church in rural Wellsburg. They were blessed with one daughter, Ivis. They lived on the family farm south of Wellsburg. Mary passed away on April 30, 1967.
He was a member of the Wellsburg Reformed Church and always had a lot of friends.
Leonard was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; his parents; grandson, Richard Anders; three brothers, Fred, John and George; and one sister, Anna Claus.
Survivors include his daughter, Ivis Anders and husband, Wendell of Aplington; two grandchildren, Chuck Anders of Arroya Grande, CA, and Connie Huntrod of Altoona; three great-grandsons, Jeff and Kevin Anders and Kyle Huntrod; great-granddaughter, Sara Huntrod; and two great-great-grandchildren, Nathan and Victoria Anders.
The Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg was in charge of the arrangements.
