Thelma Jayne Murray, 89, formerly of Wellsburg, passed away on Friday, May 19, 2000, at the Charlotte Family Care in Charlotte, NC, of natural causes. Until recently, she had made her home with her son and family in Harrisburg, NC.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 23, at the Wellsburg Reformed Church at 1:30 p.m. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Bob Valentine, Walter Block, Gary Button, Harlyn Riekena, Elmer Ruter and Bernard Harms.
Memorials may be directed to the Wellsburg Reformed Church or the Wellsburg Library.
Thelma was born on September 12, 1910, in Independence the daughter of Morris L. and Grace Rogers Jayne. She was united in marriage to William D. Murray on May 25, 1940, in Independence.
An elementary teacher, Mrs. Murray began her career in Anamosa. She later taught many years in New Providence and Wellsburg. In retirement, she and her husband enjoyed family and friends, golf and ballroom dancing.
She was a member of the Wellsburg Reformed Church where she sang in the choir. She was a member of the Eldora chapter of Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, William D.; her parents; and a sister, Betty Jayne Harden.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda Raymond of Fayetteville, NY; son, William A. of Harrisburg, NC; a sister, Beryl Jayne Weber of Independence; and six grandchildren.
The Doyen-Abels Funeral Home, Wellsburg, was in charge of the arrangements.
