John J. Doyen Jr., 77, of Wellsburg, died April 4 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. Funeral services were April 8 at Wellsburg Reformed Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. Military rites were conducted by Wellsburg AMVETS Post No. 91 and American Legion Post No. 213. A memorial fund has been established.

John was born July 14, 1923[sic], the son of John and Grace (Shugar) Doyen. He grew up in Wellsburg and graduated from Wellsburg High School. He was inducted into the United States Army, serving his country during the Korean Conflict, where he was stationed at Tokyo, Japan. John was honorably discharged on February 2, 1953. John then attended Mortuary School in St. Louis, and after graduation, he became a licensed Iowa funeral director. John returned home to Wellsburg and began working for his father at Doyen Furniture and Appliance, and at Doyen Funeral Home. On June 6, 1970, John was united in marriage to Donna Johns at his home in Wellsburg. John worked as a funeral director in the family business until his retirement in 1986.

John was a member of the Wellsburg Reformed Church, a fifty-year member of the Wellsburg American Legion Post No. 213, a past member of the Wellsburg AMVETS Post No. 91 and a member of the Iowa Funeral Director's Association. John enjoyed gardening.

He is survived by his wife Donna of the Presbyterian Village in Ackley; one daughter, Monica Kruse and her husband Bob of Conrad; one son, Joseph Doyen of Wellsburg; one brother Elwood "Red" Doyen and his wife Vaneda of Wellsburg; one sister, Florence Lindaman and her husband Delbert of Wellsburg; three step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
