JOHANNA SCHWARCK

Johanna Schwarck, 80, the mother of Connie Walton of Grinnell, died Saturday, Sept. 3, at Valley View Nursing Center in Eldora.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Eldora, with burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Grundy Center.

She was the daughter of William and Marie Slyfer Dekker and was born Oct. 10, 1913, near Grundy Center. She attended rural schools in Grundy Center.

On Jan. 28, 1937, she was married to Howard Long in LaPorte City. They owned and operated Long's Service Station, Lunch Room and Grocery for over 30 years.

She was married to Floyd Schwarck March 22, 1968, in Ivester. The couple lived on a farm north of Whitten until she entered Valley View Nursing Center in July of this year. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Eldora.

Surviving are her husband; two daughters, Carolyn Schafer of Eldora and Connie Walton of Grinnell; one son, Gary Long of Marshalltown; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two stepsons, Chris Schwarck of Mason City and Jerry Schwarck of rural Conrad; one stepdaughter, Dorothy Schwarck of Rockford, Ill.; five step-grandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Albert Dekker of Grundy Center; and two sisters, Margaret Norman of Grundy Center and Gezenna Loveless of LaPorte City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband; a twin brother, Joe Dekker; and a sister, Frieda Benema.

Johanna Schwarck Services Held

Mrs. Floyd (Johanna) Schwarck, 80, died Saturday, September 3, at the Valley View Nursing Center in Eldora.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 7, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Eldora with Father Rick Dagit officiating. Burial was in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Johanna Mary Schwarck was born October 10, 1913, near Grundy Center, to William and Marie Slyfer Dekker. She was educated in Grundy county rural schools.

On January 28, 1937, she married Howard Long in LaPorte City. For over 30 years they owned and operated Long's Service Station, Lunch Room and Grocery in Whitten.

On March 22, 1968, she married Floyd Schwark at Ivester. The couple lived on a farm north of Whitten until she entered Valley View Nursing Center on July 25, 1994. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Eldora.

Surviving are her husband; two daughters, Mrs. Allyn (Carolyn) Schafer of Eldora and Mrs. Dennis (Connie) Walton of Grinnell; one son, Gary Long of Marshalltown; 10 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; 2 step-sons, Chris Schwark of Mason City and Jerry Schwark of rural Conrad; 1 step-daughter, Dorothy Schwarck of Rockford, IL; 5 step-grandchildren; 1 brother, Albert Dekker of Grundy Center; 2 sisters, Mrs. Wallace (Margaret) Norman of Grundy Center and Gezenna Loveless of LaPorte City; and 1 sister-in-law, Gladys Dekker of Grundy Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband; twin brother, Joe Dekker; and sister, Frieda Bottema.

Biersborn Funeral Home of Union was in charge of the arrangements.
