Dave "Wags" Wagner, 47, of Ackley, passed away Wednesday, April 11 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.

Funeral services were Saturday, April 14 at Ackley High School Gymnasium. Rev. Tim Diehl and Rev. Jack Ritsema officiated. Burial was in the Faith Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Ackley.

David was born July 27, 1953 in Sioux City, the son of Harold J. Wagner Sr. and Hazel Brienzo. He was a graduate of East High School in Sioux City. He then attended and graduated from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD and South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD. He was married to Krista Meinders on August 13, 1983 at the Washington Reformed Church near Ackley.

He was a Veteran of the Navy, involved in CISM Games, a member of Navy Wrestlers, wrestled in the World Championships in Canada and was on the 1976 Olympic Try Out Team for wrestling. He was SFU Coach to Germany and New Zealand and wrestled for Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD. He was a graduate Assistant Coach at South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD, was a wrestling coach at West Harrison for two years, head wrestling coach at Eldora-New Providence for six years and wrestling coach at AGWSR for the past 10 years. He was a past coach of football, track, softball and volleyball. He was a three time wrestling champion in Iowa Games, rode RAGBRAI and was a member of the Ackley American Legion. He was a PE/Health teacher for Eldora-New Providence Schools. He was a member of the Faith Presbyterian Church, Ackley.

He is survived by his wife, Krista of Ackley; two sons, Tyler and Hunter, and one daughter, Gabriel, all at home, one daughter from a previous marriage, Dawn Wagner of Minneapolis, MN; father and step-mother, Harold Sr. and Betty Wagner of Jefferson, SD; mother and step-father, Hazel and Tom Brienzo of Sioux City; one sister, Barb Woolworth of Sioux City; and one brother, Harold Wagner, Jr. of Sioux City.

He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Kenneth Meinders.

Sietsema Funeral Home, Ackley, was in charge of the arrangements.
