Ray Toomsen Dies Suddenly, Funeral Held Last Thursday

Funeral services for Ray Toomsen were held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday at the family home and at 1:30 p.m. at the Second Christian Reformed Church. Clergymen were the Rev. John H. Elenbaas and Rev. Kasjen Tebben.

Two duet numbers were sung by Mrs. Wilbur Knock and Mrs. Harold Okones, accompanied by Mrs. Clarence Beecroft, organist. Flower attendants were Mrs. H. L. Luwe and Mrs. Henry Kannegieter.

Pall bearers were Ivan Slifer, Leland Luwe, Dick Sicard, Bernard Siedschlag, LeRoy Kruse and Marvin Eilderts. Honorary pall bearers were Ben Boelman, John W. Ross, H. L. Luwe, Henry Kannegeiter, Dick Riekena, and George Bessman.

Interment was made in the Shiloh Cemetery at Wellsburg.

Mr. Toomsen passed away very suddenly on Monday evening, June 2, at his home in Wellsburg due to a heart attack. He reached the age of 75 years, 2 months and 1 day.

He was born on a farm in German Township, Grundy County north of Wellsburg, on March 31, 1894, the son of Dick and Heldena Schmidt Toomsen. He attended the rural school in the area. In 1922 he was united in marriage to Miss Ella Riekens. Following their marriage they lived on the farm of his parents. This union was blessed with a daughter, Vivolyn. They retired from the farm in 1942 and moved to Wellsburg.

Ray was a member of the Second Christian Reformed Church of Wellsburg having joined by Letter of Transfer in 1951. He served on the church consistory for many years.

He was a veteran of World War I and was a charter member of the American Legion Post 213 of Wellsburg. He also was a member of Grundy County Barracks 1418, Veterans of World War I.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother, Tyle and a sister, Tillie, Mrs. Matt Groen.

Those left to mourn his passing are: his wife, Ella; 1 daughter, Vivolyn, Mrs. Bernard Keninger of Spencer; 2 sisters, (Dena), Mrs. Ben Siedschlag of Ackley, (Kate), Mrs. Albert T. Kruse of Wellsburg; 6 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
