Mrs. John T. Riekena Laid To Rest Here

Funeral services for Mrs. John T. (Norma) Riekena were held on Saturday, April 30, 1977 at 2:00 p.m. at the Second Christian Reformed Church. Rev. John H. Elenbaas officiated at the services. Mrs. Harold Okones and Mrs. Ivan Slifer sang two duet numbers, "Beyond The Sunset" and "Does Jesus Care." Mrs. Clarence Beecroft was organist. Mrs. Tyle Huisman and Mrs. Ralph Huisman were flower attendants. Pallbearers were Tyle Huisman, Ralph Huisman, Sherwood Snittjer, Jakie Lindaman, Clarence Geerdes and Harold Geerdes. Interment was made in Shiloh cemetery in Wellsburg. Doyen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Riekena was born Norma Dorothy Peters on February 26, 1911, in Wellsburg, the daughter of Ben and Elsie (Tjaden) Peters, and graduated from the Wellsburg high school in 1928. She attended Iowa State Teachers College (now UNI) at Cedar Falls for one year. Following her college education she taught in rural schools in the area and also was a substitute teacher in the Wellsburg Community School. On January 23, 1931, she was united in marriage to John T. Riekena at Marshalltown. Following their marriage they made their home in Wellsburg and have lived here all of their married life.

Norma worked for 20 years in the office of the Ackley Sales Pavilion owned by her father.

She was a member of the Second Chrsistian Reformed Church of Wellsburg having made confession of her faith in Jesus Christ on April 17, 1949, and was an active member of the Helping Hand Society as long as her health permitted.

Her father preceded her in death.

Those left to mourn her passing are: her husband, John T. Riekena, one son, Donn J. Riekena of Minneapolis, Minn.; 1 daughter, (Judith Ann), Mrs. Martin Kasischke of Eldora; 2 granddaughters, Kim and Tam Kasischke, both of Cedar Falls; her mother, Mrs. Elsie Peters of Wellsburg; 1 brother, Glen Peters of Ackley, and many other relatives and friends.
