Rites Held For Henry Kannegieter

Henry Kannegieter, 93, of Wellsburg, passed away on Thursday, September 15, at the Long Term Care Unit of the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center of natural causes.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, September 17, at 1:30 p.m. at the Second Christian Reformed Church in Wellsburg, with burial following in the Shiloh Township Cemetery in Wellsburg.

Pallbearers were his grandsons, Mark DeVries, Mike DeVries, John Handlogten, Matt DeVries, Glen Handlogten, and Henry R. Vanderzyden. Honorary pallbearers were Doug DeYoung, Darrell Sents, Steve Faherty and Darell McMartin.

Memorials are to be directed to the Timothy Christian School, which he helped found.

Henry was born on July 5, 1901, on the family farm in German Township near Ackley, the son of Eibe and Tobina Kannegieter. He farmed in this area for over 40 years. Henry's hobbies included golfing, fishing, gardening and traveling. His travels included visits to his brothers, sisters, children and grandchildren.

Henry was a member of the Second Christian Reformed Church where he sang in the choir and served on the consistory for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Mary of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; three daughters, Verda Vanderzyden and husband Henry of Eldora, Mary Handlogten and husband Howard of Rockford, Illinois, and Martha DeVries and husband Marvin of Madison, Wisconsin; 10 grandchildren; Kathy McMartin (Darell) of Grundy Center, Henry Vanderzyden (Sue) of Bryon, Illinois, Kristie Sents (Darrell) of Wellsburg, Marie DeYoung (Doug) of Racine, Wisconsin, Glen Handlogten (Laurel) of Rochester, Minnesota, Laura Faherty (Steve) of Sheridan, Indiana, John Handlogten (Cindy) of Rockford, Illinois, Mark DeVries (Dianne) of Holland, Michigan, Mike DeVries of Madison, Wisconsin and Matt DeVries of Madison, Wisconsin; 19 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Harry and Fred Kannegieter; one sister, Esther; and one great-great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Fannie of 51 years; his parents; two brothers, John and Matthew; and three sisters, Marie, Gesina and Margaret.

Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg was in charge of the arrangements.
