Rites For Mrs. Tena Hayenga Held Saturday

Funeral services for Mrs. Tena Hayenga were held on Saturday, August 21 at 10:30 a.m. at the Second Christian Reformed Church. Rev. Donald L. Martin officiated at the services.

Two selections were sung by a ladies' duet, Mrs. Harold Okones and Mrs. Ivan Slifer. Mrs. Clarence Beecroft was organist. Flower attendants were Mrs. Tielko H. Bunger and Mrs. Henry Riebkes.

Pallbearers were George Groeneveld, Marvin Groeneveld, Leslie Groeneveld, Gene Groeneveld, Dean Groeneveld and Bill Boelman.

Interment was in Shiloh cemetery in Wellsburg.

Doyen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Heyenga [sic] passed away at 11:45 Wednesday morning, August 18, at the Presbyterian Home in Ackley due to complications of advanced age. She reached the age of 87 years, 7 months and 29 days.

She was hospitalized at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo on July 6th for surgery and then returned to the Presbyterian Home on August 5th. She had been a resident of the home since June of 1980.

She was born Tena Gertrude Groeneveld on December 19, 1894, the daughter of John and Ella (Peters) Groeneveld and spent most of her life north of Wellsburg in the area where she was born. She received her education in the rural school in the area.

Her mother died when she was only two years old and her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Ben B. Lindaman, raised her and gave her a home until she was married to George K. Hayenga on August 28, 1919. Following their marriage they lived on the same farm where she was raised, until they moved to Wellsburg in 1945 to make their home. Her husband passed away on January 4, 1979.

Mrs. Hayenga was a long time member of the Second Christian Reformed Church of Wellsburg, having joined by transfer of membership, together with her husband, on November 4, 1931.

She was a member of the Ashing-Jaspers American Legion Post 213 Auxiliary of Wellsburg for over 50 years, and was active in this organization until her health began to fail.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, and a brother, John Groeneveld.

Survivors include a half brother, George Groeneveld of Rapid City, SD, and several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends from a distance who attended funeral services Saturday for Mrs. Tena Hayenga were Mr. and Mrs. George Groeneveld of Rapid City, S.D.; Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Groeneveld of Bloomington, Mn,; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hayenga of Forreston, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Frances Julius and daughter, and Mrs. Don Margo of Sibley; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hayenga and Mrs. Dennis Hayenga of Little Rock; Mrs. Brenda Seaman of Spirit Lake and Mrs. Frieda Freitag of Sarasota, Fl.
