Funeral Held Saturday For G. K. Hayenga

Funeral services for George K. Hayenga were held on Saturday, January 6, 1979 at 2:00 p.m. at the Second Christian Reformed Church. Rev. John H. Elenbaas officiated at the services. Mrs. Harold Okones and Roger Nederhoff sang two duet numbers. Miss Monica Doyen was organist. Flower attendants were Mrs. Tielko H. Bunger and Mrs. Henry Riebkes. Pall bearers were Raymond Rieken, Lester Rieken, Roger Peters, Virgil Byl, Don Boheman and Wayne Shugar. Interment was made at Shiloh Cemetery in Wellsburg. The flag folding ceremony was conducted by the Wellsburg American Legion and Amvet Posts.

George K. Heyenga passed away around 11 o'clock on Thursday morning, January 4, 1979, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls due to complications of advanced age.

He had been taken to the hospital on Saturday, December 30th for treatment after having been at the Scenic Manor Nursing Center in Iowa Falls for a short time. He reached the age of 88 years, 5 months and 18 days.

He was born on a farm in Butler County, rural Ackley, on July 16, 1890, the son of Klaas and Christena (Ackerman) Hayenga and attended the rural school in the area. On August 28, 1919, he was united in marriage to Tena Groeneveld at the bride's home. Following their marriage they moved to a farm north of Wellsburg. They retired from the farm in 1945 and moved to Wellsburg to make their home.

George was a long time member of the Second Christian Reformed Church of Wellsburg having joined by transfer of membership on November 4, 1931. He served in the U.S. Army in World War One and belonged to the Ashing-Jaspers American Legion Post 213 of Wellsburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, John, William and Harm Hayenga; four sisters, Mrs. Anna Vanderwerf, Mrs. Elizabeth Weiland, Mrs. Kate Miller and Mrs. Hattie Wubbens.

Those left to mourn his passing are: his wife, Tena; two sisters, Miss Tena Hayenga and Mrs. Jennie Schultz, both residing at the Scenic Manor at Iowa Falls and several nieces and nephews.

Those from a distance who attended funeral services Saturday afternoon for George Hayenga were: Mr. and Mrs. George Groneveld and Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Groneveld and family of Minneapolis, Minn.; Harlan Hayenga, Mrs. Mabel Weiland, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Weiland and Mrs. Don Torkenson of Windom, Minn.; Mrs. Ronald Markman of Worthington, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Julius, Mrs. Dan Margo and Jody, Mrs. Clyde Bachman and Mrs. John Schuck of Sibley; Mrs. Don Kruger of George; Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Gross, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hayenga, Mr. and Mrs. Verlyn Venenga, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Hayenga of Little Rock; Brenda Hayenga of Spirit Lake; Mr. and Mrs. Rick Dodd of Muscatine; Dr. and Mrs. Duane Drum and Douglas of Remsen.
