Death Claims Businessman Virgil Claassen

Funeral services for Virgil Claassen, 65, who died Saturday at the Eldora Memorial Hospital of an apparent heart attack, were held Wednesday afternoon at the Second Christian Reformed Church in Wellsburg. Burial was in the Shiloh cemetery at Wellsburg.

Rev. John H. Elenbaas officiated the service. Casket bearers were Thomas Claassen Jr., Gary Clark, David Harrenstein, James A. Richtsmeier, and Gaylen L. Geiken.

Special music at the service was provided by vocalists Mrs. Ivan Slifer and Mrs. Harold Okones. Mrs. LuRay Neessen was organist.

Flower attendants were Mrs. Eugene Ruter and Mrs. Harley B. Lindaman.

Doyen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He was born May 3, 1911, in Wellsburg, the son of Dick and Lulu Claassen. He attended Wellsburg schools, graduating in 1928. He married Mabel Harrenstein on February 23, 1939.

They were employed at the Eldora Training School for Boys until 1941, when they moved to Wellsburg. He was engaged in the construction trade and cabinet making business with his brother, Thomas, for several years. He was also employed as an automobile salesman for Wood Auto Company in Eldora and later by Ramco Industries of Eldora.

Mr. Claassen was a member of the Second Christian Reformed Church of Wellsburg, where he had served as a Deacon.

Survivors include his wife Mabel, a son, Alan Dick Claassen of Tama, a daughter, Mrs. Veryl (Constance Mae) Sanderson of Ankeny, a granddaughter and grandson, Kristine Michelle Sanderson and Viktor Alan Sanderson, both of Ankeny; a sister, Mrs. Glenn (Ella) Hamilton of Alden; and two brothers, Richard and Thomas Claassen, both of Wellsburg.
