Funeral Services Held Monday For William Bettenga
Funeral services for William W. Bettenga were held on Monday afternoon, June 4 at 1:00 p.m. at the Doyen Funeral Home and at 1:30 p.m. at the Wellsburg Reformed Church. Rev. Gideon Wolbrink was officiating clergyman. Mrs. Douglas Geerdes and Mrs. Robert Valentine sang two selections. Miss Marcella Neessen was organist. Flower attendants were Mrs. George Sietsema and Mrs. Herman Eckhoff. Pall bearers were Harley Freese, George Sietsema, Herman Eckhoff, Harold H. Harms, George Boekhoff and Harold Weichers. Interment was made in Shiloh cemetery. Graveside military rites were conducted by the Wellsburg Amvets Post 91 and American Legion Post 213.
William W. Bettenga passed away around 11:00 o'clock Friday evening, June 1, at the Parkview Gardens Care Center in Waterloo, following a lingering illness. He had entered the Care Center the day before, being transferred from the Veterans Administration Hospital at Iowa City. He reached the age of 63 years, 10 months and 14 days.
He was born on a farm in Grundy county, near Fern, on July 17, 1909, the son of William and Bertha Bettenga. He attended the rural school in the area. On May 21, 1943, he was united in marriage to Miss Grace Bunger at Alamogordo, New Mexico. During World War II he was inducted into the U.S. Army and served his country from July 1942 to October 1945. Following his discharge from the service the couple made their home in Wellsburg. They lived all of their married life in Wellsburg.
They were privileged to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary on May 21, 1968, with their family and friends.
Those who preceded him were: his father, one brother and one sister.
He leaves to mourn his passing: his wife, Grace, 1 daughter (Carol), Mrs. Kenneth Abbas of Roberts, Wis.; 1 grandson, Troy Abbas; his mother, Mrs. William Bettenga Sr. of Ackley; six sisters and brothers: Henry Bettenga of Tripoli, Miss Carolyn Bettenga of Ackley, Miss Vera Bettenga of Ackley, (Cora), Mrs. Wayne Albright of Bradford; (Florence), Mrs. James McManus of Chicago; Edward Bettenga of Seattle, Washington and a host of other relatives and friends.
