Services Held Friday For Marie Bessman
Marie M. Bessman, age 94, of Wellsburg, Iowa, passed away at the Grundy Center Memorial Hospital, Grundy Center, on Tuesday afternoon, November 3, 1987, from complications of old age.
Funeral services were held at the Second Christian Reformed Church, Wellsburg, at 1:30 p.m., Friday, November 6, 1987. Pastor Orwin Duistermars was the officiating clergyman.
Special music was provided by the quartet of Richard Schafer, Lary Riebkes, Melvin Haupt and Arnold Eiten. They sang two selections, "He Leadeth Me" and "How Great Thou Art." They were accompanied by Karen Meyer.
Mrs. Patricia Neessen played the prelude and the postlude music on the organ.
Casket bearers were grandsons, Charles Eddy, Bryon Bessman, Kelly Schultz, Mark Bessman, Rodney Whitmire, Tim Roegner, Gregory Moore and Scott Bessman.
Flower ladies were Mrs. Pam Hook, Mrs. Lucille Claassen and Mrs. Debra Aalfs.
Ushers were Roy DeNeui, Carl J. Nederhoff and Warren Anderson.
Burial was in Shiloh Township Cemetery, Wellsburg.
The Doyen-Abels Funeral Home of Wellsburg was in charge of arrangements.
Marie M. Bessman was born on August 24, 1893, at Algonquin, IL, to Herman and Wilhelmina Brakmeier Willig. She was one of eight children.
She married George A. Bessman on November 19, 1919, at her parents' home at Hubbard, IA. To this union were born three sons, Zeal, Brice and Donald, and five daughters, Minnie, Eileen, Delilah, Ruth and Lois.
She attended school at Hubbard, IA. She was a graduate of the first class of The School of Nursing at the Evangelical Deaconess Hospital in Marshalltown, IA, in 1917. She had two daughters, one daughter-in-law and two granddaughters who also graduated as nurses from the same School of Nursing.
She and her husband farmed near Buckeye, IA, and Alden, IA, after their marriage until 1940. They then moved to their farm near Wellsburg, IA, where they farmed until 1954 when they retired and moved into Wellsburg.
She was a member of the Second Christian Reformed Church of Wellsburg and The Willing Workers group of the Church. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
She is survived by her three sons, Zeal of Green Mountain, IA, Brice of Wellsburg, IA, and Donald of Waterloo, IA, and five daughters, Mrs. Minnie Eddy of Dike, IA, Mrs. Eileen (William) Schultz of Grundy Center, IA, Mrs. DeLilah (Merle) Whitmire of Wellsburg, IA, Mrs. Ruth Roegner of Hiawatha, IA, and Mrs. Lois (Robert) Moore of Marshalltown, IA. Also, 31 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, George, three grandchildren, one great-grandchild, five sisters and two brothers.
A memorial fund has been established by the family.
