Mrs. Trena Geerdes Died Sept. 25

Mrs. Trena Geerdes passed away Monday morning, September 25, 1978, at the Mercy Hospital in Iowa City due to complications of advanced age. She reached the age of 89 years, 11 months and 16 days.

She was born on October 9, 1888, on a farm in Shiloh township, west of Wellsburg the daughter of Wiert and Lena (Eckhoff) Riekena. She attended the rural school in the area and later attended the State Normal School in Cedar Falls. She taught in several rural schools in the area. On August 24, 1911, she was united in marriage to George H. Geerdes at the First Christian Reformed Church by the Rev. G. L. Hoefker. Following their marriage they made their home in Wellsburg. Her husband passed away on August 2, 1952.

Mrs. Geerdes was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church of Wellsburg having made confession of her faith in Jesus Christ on October 5, 1919, and was a long-time member of the Ladies Guild of the church.

Preceding her in death were: her parents, her husband, 2 sisters, Mrs. Freda Williams, Mrs. Grace Lillibridge and 2 brothers, Wiert W. Riekena and Dick W. Riekena.

She leaves to mourn her passing: one son, Harold Geerdes of Wellsburg; one daughter, (Leona), Mrs. Jack Fraseur of Tipton; 5 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon, September 28, at the First Christian Reformed church, Rev. Leslie Kuiper officiated at the service. Two selections were sung by Richard Schafer. Elizabeth Eekhoff was organist. Mrs. Ronald deNeui, Mrs. Arnold Eiten and Mrs. Junior Ascher were flower attendants. Pallbearers were Mayo Tjaden, Raymond Junker, Willard Riekena, Ronald deNeui, Arnold Eiten and Elmer Fritzel. Interment was made in the First Christian Reformed Church Cemetery. Doyen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
