Anna Geerdes Services Held

Anna Geerdes, 93, passed away on Tuesday, June 25, at the Allen Memorial Hospital. She was a resident at Maple Manor Nursing Home in Aplington since November of 1989.

Funeral services were held Friday, at 1:30 p.m. at the First Christian Reformed Church, rural Wellsburg, with Rev. Thomas Vos officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Casket Bearers were Clarence Claassen, Delbert Meyer, Harlan Rust, Robert Geerdes, Merle Bakker, and Virgil Heetland.

She was the daughter of John H. and Dee Reka Graffie Claassen.

Anna grew up around the Steamboat Rock area and received her education in the rural schools. She also worked for various families in the community.

On June 30, 1920, she was united in marriage to Ben J. Geerdes of Steamboat Rock, at the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church by Rev. Drake. Together Ben and Anna farmed over 30 years before retiring and moving into a new home on their farm west of Wellsburg.

Anna was a long time member of the First Christian Reformed Church and of the Ladies Guild. She enjoyed being a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, homemaker and having a large garden.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ben on December 13, 1977, four brothers: Dick, John, Lee and Fred; five sisters, Lean (Mrs. John R. Fisher), Pearl (Mrs. E. D. Meyer), Bertha (Mrs. Albert Siefken), Ada (Mrs. Harm Klunder) and Charlotte (Mrs. Harm R. Rust).

She is survived by one son Jonas and wife Edith of Waterloo; two grandsons, Brad and wife Sherry of West Union, and Gregg and wife Mary of Iowa City; three great-grandsons, Jeremy, Brian and Ross Geerdes of West Union; one sister-in-law, Grace Bakker of Wellsburg and two brothers-in-law, Albert Siefken of Marion and Gratus J. Geerdes of Ackley. Also numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial fund has been established.
