Rites Held For Jans Mennenga
Jans Mennenga, 79, of Wellsburg, passed away on Friday, June 1, at the Maple Manor Nursing Home in Aplington, where he had been residing since August of 1989.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, June 4, at the First Christian Reformed Church, rural Wellsburg. Rev. Thomas J. Vos officiated.
Richard Schafer sang "How Great Thou Art" and "Abide With Me." He was accompanied by Miss Elizabeth Eekhoff, who also played selected numbers for the prelude and postlude.
Casket bearers were Whitey Ross, Clarence Freese, Melvin Nederhoff, Frank Meyeraan Jr., Jonas Geerdes and Rick Riebkes.
Ushers were Dave Primus and Lee Bakker. Mrs. Arvilla Freese and Mrs. Ardy Ross were in charge of the floral arrangements.
Interment was in the church cemetery.
Jans T. Mennenga, son of John and Fredrika Riebkes Mennenga, was born on a farm in Shiloh Township, Grundy county, on December 15, 1910. He grew up on the farm and attended rural schools.
On October 28, 1949, Jans was united in marriage to Johanna H. VanLoh at the East Friesland Presbyterian Church, Ackley. They farmed west of Wellsburg on the Hardin county line which was their home place.
Jans retired in 1977. They lived on the farm until 1980, when they moved to Wellsburg.
He was preceded in death by one granddaughter.
Jans is survived by his wife Johanna, of Wellsburg; one daughter Janice Koch and her husband Paul and daughters Carmen and Carla of Steamboat Rock; and two sons, Marlyn and wife Karen and children Kerri and Ryan, rural Wellsburg, and Jay and wife Connie and sons Trent and Scott, of rural Wellsburg.
A memorial fund has been established.
The Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
