Family, Friends Mourn Passing Of Sam Ross

Sam Ross died at the Grundy County Memorial hospital in Grundy Center at 6:45 a.m. Tuesday, June 7th.

Funeral services were held on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the Second Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Kasjen Tebben of Cedar Falls as officiating clergyman.

Music was given by Mrs. Harold Okones and Mrs. Ivan Slifer who sang two duet numbers. Mrs. Clarence Beecroft was organist. Mrs. Herman Koch and Mrs. Manley Bakker were flower attendants.

Pall bearers were Homer Ross, Joe D. Ross, Donald Huisman, Raymond Huisman, LuVerne Ross and Wallace Getting. Interment was made in Shiloh Cemetery at Wellsburg. Arrangements were in charge of Doyen Funeral Home.

He was born May 29th, 1895, in Shiloh Township, near Wellsburg, the son of Martin A. and Dora (Sievers) Ross. He grew up on the farm northwest of Wellsburg and attended the rural school and later a short course in mechanics in Des Moines. He worked as a mechanic in a garage in Grundy Center and Holland before his marriage. On February 24, 1915, he was united in marriage to Dena Getting of Holland and they farmed in the Wellsburg area for about 20 years except for 6 years when they lived near Kanawha, Iowa. They returned to Grundy County in 1930 and moved to town where he worked with the John Ross Road Construction Crew for several years and then as a salesman for John Ross when they went into the machinery business.

In 1950 he had to give up active employment to devote his time to the care of his wife who passed away in August of 1967 after a long lingering illness.

Mr. Ross was a member of the Second Christian Reformed Church of Wellsburg and served as an Elder and Deacon and a Sunday School teacher during his lifetime.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, an infant son, his brothers Albert and William and 2 brothers in infancy.

He is survived by his daughter, (Yvonne), Mrs. Herman Sietsema; his sons, Donald and Delbert, all of Wellsburg; three brothers, Joe Ross of Grundy Center, Gratus Ross and Martin Ross, both of Wellsburg; one sister, (Nettie), Mrs. Jerry Huisman of Grundy Center; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
