ROSS, GETTING, SCHMIDT

Donald W. Ross, 81, of Wellsburg, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1999, at the Long Term Care Unit of Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center of natural causes.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Aug. 20, at 10:30 a.m. at the Wellsburg Reformed Church. Burial followed in the Shiloh Cemetery. Pastor Kevin Ver Hoeven officiated the service. Full military graveside rites were conducted by the Wellsburg AMVETS Post 91 and American Legion Post No. 213. A memorial fund has been established.

Pallbearers were Ryan Ross, Whitney Ross, David Engelkes, Kris Hulne, Kerri Ross, Brody Ross, Kelly Engelkes and Roni Hulne.

Don was born on April 19, 1918, in Wellsburg the son of Samuel and Dena (Getting) Ross. He attended school in Wellsburg. He served his country in the U.S. Army entering on May 2, 1941, and served during World War II. He was a Purple Heart recipient.

On March 12, 1941, he was united in marriage to Louise Schmidt in Wellsburg. He worked for Mid Equipment for eight years and before retiring Don and Louise owned and operated "The Pub" restaurant in Wellsburg from 1968 to 1980. He was a member of the Wellsburg Reformed Church, Wellsburg AMVETS 91 and American Legion Post No. 213 and he sang in the Interfaith Men's Choir.

Survivors include his wife, Louise of Wellsburg; two daughters, Ioleta Blakely of Council Bluffs and Melissa Engelkes and husband Gene of Wellsburg; two sons, Ronn Ross and wife Kathy of Grundy Center and Bill Ross and wife Claudia of Des Moines; one sister, Yvonne Sietsema and husband Herman of Wellsburg; one brother, Bob Ross and wife Wilma of Wellsburg; 12 grandchildren, Kris Hulne, Roni Hulne, Amy and Brad Kroeger, Ryan and Christi Ross, Kerri Ross, Kassi Ross, Whitney Ross, Brody Ross, Bret Engelkes, David Engelkes, Kelly Engelkes and Lindsey Engelkes; and two great-grandchildren, Paige Hulne and Katherine Ross.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one infant brother, Simon.

The Doyen-Abels Funeral Home, Wellsburg, was in charge of the arrangements.
