Herman Donald Groote, 81, of Wellsburg, died August 29 at the Maple Manor Nursing Home in Aplington of cancer. Funeral services were September 1 at the Wellsburg Reformed Church in Wellsburg. Burial followed in Shiloh Cemetery in Wellsburg. Military rites were conducted by the Wellsburg AMVETS Post #91 and American Legion Post #213. A memorial fund has been established.
Herman was born June 26, 1921,on the family farm in Colfax Township Grundy County, the son of Harm and Annie (Buskohl) Groote. He attended Colfax #6 rural school and graduated from Grundy Center High School in 1939. He was united in marriage to Junice Beecroft on December 14, 1942 in Wellsburg. He served three years in the U.S. Army in the Pacific during WWII. After his time in the service, he farmed the family farm for 14 years. After that, he was a rural mail carrier for 13 years at Holland and 10 years in Conrad.
He was a member of the Second Christian Reformed Church in Wellsburg, where he served on the consistory for 12 years. Then in 1991 he transferred membership to the Wellsburg Reformed Church where he served on the consistory for four years. He was an avid golfer and bowled for many years and loved to travel. Herman was a member of the Wellsburg AMVETS Post #91 and American Legion Post #213.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Junice in 1995; his parents; a son, Preston in 2002; and one brother, Ernest.
Survivors include his son, Sheldon and his wife DaNelle of Montezuma; a daughter-in-law, Mary Groote of Arvada, CO; three grandchildren, two brothers, Benjamin and his wife Viola Groote of Grundy Center and Roy and his wife Bernice Groote of Dike; and a sister, Mary and her husband Herman DeBerg of Grundy Center.
