Marian Flater Services Held

Marian F. Flater, 78, passed away of cancer Friday, September 27, 1996, at the Hospice Care Unit of Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center, Iowa.

Funeral services were held Monday, September 30 at 10:30 a.m. at the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church in Holland with Pastor Larry Hoop officiating. Pallbearers were Delmar Flater, LuVerne Bakker, Thelma Clingerman, Darrell Flater, Norman Meester and Mardean VanDeest. Interment followed at the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Marian was born August 6, 1918 in Palermo Township in Grundy County, the daughter of George and Jennie (Eckhoff) Knock. She graduated from Grundy Center High School in 1936, then taught in rural Grundy Center for several years. She was united in marriage with Melvin Flater on April 17, 1941, at the Colfax Presbyterian Church. Marian farmed with her husband in Colfax Township until retirement. She made her home in Grundy Center in 1994. Marian was a member of the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church in rural Holland where she taught Sunday School and was active in the Ladies Circle.

Marian was preceded in death by her parents; husband Melvin in 1994; and one sister, Lenora Bakker.

Survivors include two sons, Ron Flater and wife Eileen of Grundy Center, and Doug Flater of Iowa City; one daughter, Marilyn Howenstein of Toledo, Ohio; nine grandchildren, Andrea, Tara, Michael, Darren, Derek, Brett and Breanna Flater, and Matthew and Kim Howenstein; and one sister, Irene Meester of Grundy Center.

The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center was in charge of funeral arrangements.
