Melvin Flater Services Held
Melvin Flater, of rural Holland, passed away Wednesday, August 10, at his home of natural causes, having attained the age of 75 years, 8 months and 16 days.
Funeral services were held Saturday, August 13, at Colfax Center Presbyterian Church in rural Holland at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Larry C. Hoop officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Mardean VanDeest, Betty Venenga, Jack Flater, Darrel Flater, Norman Meester and Delmar Flater. Honorary pallbearers were Andrea Flater and Tara Flater.
Melvin was born November 25, 1918, in Holland, the son of Heinrich and Jennie (Sherfield) Flater. He grew up and received his education in Grundy County.
On April 17, 1941, Melvin was united in marriage to Marian Knock at Colfax Center Presbyterian Church in rural Holland. Melvin and Marian made their home on the family farm where Melvin farmed and lived all his life.
Melvin served as Colfax Township Trustee, on the Colfax #1 School Board, and was a member of the Grundy County Extension Council. He was a member of the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church, where he served as Deacon, Trustee and as a sponsor of the Junior and Senior Youth Groups. Melvin was also a member of the Grundy County Farm Bureau.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers, Conrad, Chris and Albert; 1 infant brother, Heinrich; and 1 infant sister, Justina.
Survivors include his wife, Marian; 2 sons, Ron and wife Eileen of Grundy Center and their children Andrea, Tara, Michael, and Darren; and Doug of Marion and his children Derek, Brett and Brea; 1 daughter, Marilyn Howenstein of Sylvania, Ohio and her children Matthew and Kimberly; and 1 brother, Ernest of Grundy Center.
The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home, Grundy Center, was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
