Rites Held For Hazel Abels

Hazel Abels, 89, of Holland, passed away Saturday, November 17, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 20, at the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church, rural Holland, at 1:30 p.m. Pastor Larry C. Hoop officiated.

Casket bearers were Leon Abels, Robert Freed, Matthew LeClere, Larry Freed, Nathan LeClere, and Timothy LeClere. Honorary bearers were Daryl Eiffler and Ronald Pappas.

Interment was in the church cemetery.

Hazel Abels, daughter of Heye and Alice Franken Heronimus, was born April 8, 1901, in Grundy county, where she grew up and was educated.

On March 12, 1924, Hazel was united in marriage to Harm C. Abels.

Hazel served as church custodian from 1937 until 1944. She was then employed in housekeeping for the Grundy County Memorial Hospital from 1951 until her retirement in 1971.

She was a member of the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church in rural Holland and of the WIC (Women in Church).

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband Harm in 1949; one infant brother, Harold, and brothers Tom and Paul; and two sisters, Gertrude Hansen and Lillian Heronimus.

Hazel is survived by one son, Irvin and wife, Andeline, of Wellsburg; two daughters, Myrna, Mrs. Wesley Freed, Grundy Center, and Margie Ann, Mrs. Harlan LeClere, of Monticello; one brother, George Heronimus, Holland; six sisters, Mrs. Ella Paterni, Elma, Mrs. Henry Siefken, and Mrs. DeLoris Bakker, all of Grundy Center, Mrs. Tena Schoon, Holland, Mae, Mrs. Alfred Brower, Ackley, and IvaDean, Mrs. John Itzen, of Cedar Falls; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

A memorial fund has been established.

The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
