Conrad Abels, 81, Services At Colfax

Funeral services were held last Friday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. in the Colfax Center Presbyterian church for Conrad Abels, 81, from Grundy Center. He died at the Grundy County Memorial hospital Wednesday, December 15, 1976 where he had been a patient four days.

Rev. Jerry VanCurler officiated. Mrs. Tom Simms sang "I Won't Have To Cross Jordan Alone" and "Saved By Grace." Accompanist was Mrs. Raymond Hinders. Pallbearers were Virgil Abels, Robert Abels, Paul Abels, Irwin Abels, Thomas Verdoorn and Harold Verdoorn. Mrs. Joseph Junker and Mrs. Margaret Meyer took care of the flowers, John Paterni and Harm G. Hook were ushers. Burial was in the Colfax Center cemetery near Holland. Friends and relatives returned to the church following the committal service for fellowship and refreshments.

He was born April 27, 1895 in Colfax township, Grundy county, Iowa, the son of Barney and Annie Kruse Abels. He grew up on the farm near Holland in Colfax township. He attended college in Dubuque before entering service in World War I on February 25, 1918, and was discharged May 2, 1919. He spent most of his service time in France. After attending college in Cedar Rapids he taught in a Pleasant Valley township rural school one year. He was in the electrical business until 1970. In 1948 he moved to Grundy Center.

A memorial fund has been established.

Conrad is survived by one brother, John E. Abels of Holland, two sisters, Mrs. Henrietta Franken of Holland and Mrs. Oscar (Esther) Thielbert of Burlington, also several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
