One hundred and one years ago, on March 16, 1895, on a farm south of Aplington, in Grundy County, Florence Deters was born to Hinderikus and Gertje (Zimmerman) Deters. Florence was the youngest of eight children, having three brothers and four sisters, and was the only survivor in her immediate family. The Deters family lived on a farm south of Aplington where Florence attended rural school. Her father died in 1912. When Florence was 17 years of age, the family moved to Aplington, where she continued living at home until the time of her marriage. Florence attended and was baptized at the West Friesland Presbyterian Church, southeast of Ackley, where she started to attend Sunday school at the age of 4. On Oct. 22, 1915, at the age of 20, Florence married Ecko Mennen. To that union were born 11 children: Florence, Ecko, Gertrude, Elva, Richard, Gordon, Eunice, Cecil, Delores, Imogene and Rosalind. The family farmed in the Butler, Grundy and Franklin county areas until they moved to Waterloo in 1945, when her husband, Ecko, began working for John Deere. Ecko Mennen died on July 9, 1976, and Florence remained in her home in Waterloo, until she was 97 years of age. At that time she became a resident of the Western Home in Cedar Falls, where she was a resident until her death.

Survivors include 11 children, Florence Janssen, widow of Isebrandt, of Ackley, Ecko and his wife, Helen Mason, of Waterloo, Gertrude Neymeyer and her husband, Benjamin, of Waterloo, Elva Drier, widow of Virgil, of Waterloo, Richard and his wife, Dixie Geiler, of Mason City, Gordon and his wife, Patricia Cornelius, of Mason City, Eunice Kuhn, widow of Harold, of Charles City, Cecil and his wife, Evelyn Fischer, of Conesville, Delores Weston Herington and her husband, Robert, of Hopkinton, Imogene Moyle and her husband, Harford, of Springfield, Mo., and Rosalind Andreassen of Waterloo, 35 grandchildren, 78 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
