Rites Held For Henry Aalfs
Funeral services for Henry Aalfs were held Wednesday, November 19, at 1:30 p.m. at the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, northeast of Wellsburg. Pastor Richard Dowling officiated at the services.
Three selections were sung by Richard Schafer, soloist. A selection from the Lutheran Book of Worship was sung by the congregation, Mrs. Frank Meyeraan, Jr. was organist and accompanist.
Mrs. Tyle Huisman and Mrs. Ebe Finke were flower attendants.
Casket bearers were James Aalfs, Jim Aalfs, Muray Henricks, Jeffery Henricks, Terry Aalfs, and Lowell Aalfs. Honorary casket bearers were Michael Aalfs, John Aalfs, Leland Aalfs, and Loren Aalfs.
The interment service was held in the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church cemetery.
The Doyen Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements.
Henry Aalfs died early Sunday morning, November 16, at the Long Term Care Unit of the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center due to complications of advanced age. He reached the age of 95 years, seven months and 18 days.
He was born on a farm southeast of Wellsburg, on March 28, 1891, the son of Jacob H. and Henrietta (Paterni) Aalfs and received his education in the rural school in the area.
On October 26, 1917, he was married to Hattie Harms, at the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church Parsonage, by the Rev. C. Heinrich. Following their marriage they farmed northwest of Wellsburg and later moved to a farm in Colfax Township, northeast of Wellsburg. In 1956 they retired from the farm and moved to Wellsburg to make their home.
For the past five years he had been a resident of the Long Term Care Unit of the Grundy County Memorial Hospital.
Henry was a long-time member of the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Wellsburg.
Preceding him in death were: his parents, two brothers and two sisters and a grandson, Joel Aalfs.
Those left to mourn his passing are: his wife, Hattie, who is also a resident of the Long Term Care Unit of the Grundy County Memorial Hospital; three sons, Jake Aalfs of Wellsburg, Harm Aalfs of Holland, Lawrence Aalfs of Parkersburg; one daughter, (Marietta), Mrs. Edgar Henricks of Reinbeck; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Susie Pelkey of Niles, MI and many other relatives and friends.
