John F. Flater, Age 64, Dies

John F. Flater of RR1, Holland, passed away at his farm home at 2:27 p.m. Friday, February 8.

Funeral services were held at the Wellsburg Reformed Church, Wellsburg, on Monday, February 11 at 1:30 p.m. Pastor Roger D. Huitink officiated.

Pastor and Mrs. Roger Huitink sang "How Great Thou Art" and "Back of the Clouds." They were accompanied by Miss Marcella Neessen, who also played selected numbers for the prelude and postlude.

Casket bearers were Robert Shelton, Robert Stevens, Chris Freese, Melvin Flater, Art Flater and John Bergman.

Ushers were Roger Eilderts and Dale Murray. Mrs. Melvin Flater and Mrs. Arthur Henze were in charge of the floral arrangements.

Interment was in the Wellsburg Reformed Church Cemetery.

Relatives and friends were invited to return to the church following the committal services for a period of Christian fellowship and refreshments.

Mr. Flater was born on December 26, 1920, on the farm that he was living on in Colfax township, Grundy county. He attained the age of 64 years, one month and 12 days. He was born the son of John and Louise Bergman Flater and attended Colfax #1 rural school. He was born, raised and lived all his life on the Flater family home farm.

He was united in marriage to Jeanette Rust on June 20, 1946, at the Wellsburg Reformed Church in Wellsburg.

He was a long-time member of the Wellsburg Reformed Church and had served as an usher and deacon. He served as Colfax township committee man for the ASC and had served on the Fern Creamery Board for 30 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by one son, Arnold, of Holland; two daughters, Mrs. Marty (Ardell) Sailor of Sioux City and Mrs. James (Arlys) Strub of Roswell, GA; one brother, Edward Flater of Grundy Center; one sister, Mrs. Benjamin (Esther) Frieling of Parkersburg; and by three grandchildren.

A memorial fund has been established.

The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home of Grundy Center was in charge of the arrangements.
