Henry Engelkes Rites Monday

Henry B. Engelkes, 83, Grundy Center, died Friday, December 15, 1978 at 9:13 p.m. in the Long Term Care unit of the Grundy County Memorial hospital.

Funeral services were held Monday morning at the Wellsburg Reformed Church at 10:30 with Rev. Gideon Wolbrink officiating, assisted by Rev. Glenn Dieken. Mr. and Mrs. Duane Murra sang "Safe In The Arms of Jesus" and the congregation sang "How Great Thou Art." Miss Marcella Neessen was accompanist.

Pallbearers were Paul and Mark Eberline, Eugene and Darwin Engelkes, Frank Yackey, and Sidney Slifer, all grandsons and grandsons-in-law. Ushers were Fred Gross and George E. Anderson. Miss Alice Ruter and Mrs. Reka Gronewold were floral attendants. Burial was in the church cemetery. Friends and relatives were invited to return to the church following the committal service for a period of fellowship and refreshments.

He was born March 30, 1895 in Colfax township, Grundy county, Iowa, the son of B. M. and Swantje Meester Engelkes. On December 12, 1923 he was married to Gesiena Rademaker at the home of her parents in Pleasant Valley township. After their marriage the couple farmed in Colfax township until 1945 when they moved to Grundy Center. Mr. Engelkes entered the Long Term Care Unit July 26, 1978. He was a member of the Wellsburg Reformed church where he taught Sunday School over 50 years and served as elder 14 years.

Survivors include his wife, Gesiena, one son Bernard A. Engelkes of rural Holland, one daughter, Mrs. Virgil (JoAnn) Eberline of Grundy Center, two brothers, E. B. Engelkes of Stout and Jake Engelkes of Wellsburg, two sisters, Mrs. Ben (Trena) Wickers and Mrs. Tamme (Katherine) Tammen of Parkersburg, six grandchildren and one great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and two sisters.

Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

A special "thank you" to those who visited with their loved one at the Long Term Care Unit and to those who helped take care of him during his stay there.
