Rites Held For B. Engelkes

Bernard A. Engelkes, age 62, of Holland, passed away at the Allen Memorial Hospital, Waterloo, on Tuesday, February 9th.

Services were held at the Wellsburg Reformed Church, Wellsburg, on Friday, February 12, at 1:30 p.m. Rev. Roger D. Huitink was the officiating clergyman.

Richard Schafer, soloist, sang two selections, "Higher Ground" and "I Don't Have To Cross Jordan Alone." He was accompanied by Mrs. Harvin Meyer, who also played the prelude and the postlude on the organ.

Casket bearers were Boyd Meyer, Harvin Meyer, Ralph DeVries, Gary Meyeraan, George Kinsinger, Dwayne Sents, and Paul Engelkes.

Ushers were Donald Huisman, John Olthoff, and Marvin Stahl.

Flower ladies were Mrs. Dwayne Sents and Mrs. Paul Engelkes.

Burial was in the Church Cemetery.

Bernard Engelkes was born on March 20, 1925, in rural Wellsburg, to Henry B. and Gesiena Rademaker Engelkes.

He was a graduate of the Wellsburg High School and had attended Iowa State College in Ames.

On December 12, 1946, Bernard was united in marriage to Marian R. Smit at the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church.

Bernard was a Veteran of World War II, having served with the United States Army.

He was a member of the Wellsburg Reformed Church and was a member of the Consistory of the Church.

He was also a Board Member of the Farm Service Bureau and a Colfax Township Trustee.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Frank (Janice) Yackey, of Sussex, WI, and Mrs. Sidney (Beth) Slifer, of Holland; two sons, Eugene, and his wife Melissa, of Wellsburg, and Darwin, and his wife Sherri, of Holland; nine grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Virgil (JoAnn) Eberline, of Grundy Center.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial fund has been established by the family.

The Doyen-Abels Funeral Home of Wellsburg was in charge of the arrangements.
