George W. Boekhoff, 74, of Wellsburg, passed away December 23 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.
Funeral services were December 27 at the Wellsburg Reformed Church with Pastor Tim Diehl officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Full military rites were provided by Wellsburg AMVETS Post No. 91 and American Legion Post No. 213. A memorial fund has been established.
George was born April 8, 1927 in Mayo Lake, MN, the son of John and Mary (VanderWerf) Boekhoff. At the age of nine, George and his family moved to Grundy County. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1945, serving his country during WWII. On March 19, 1949, George was united in marriage to Betty Fistler at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.
George retired from John Deere in Waterloo after 26 1/2 years of service. He had lived in Wellsburg for the past 52 years. He was a member of the Wellsburg Reformed Church, a member of the men's group at church, and he was also a member of UAW 838 of Waterloo. George loved collecting miniature John Deere tractors, tilling gardens, plowing snow, doing genealogical research and making wooden collectibles.
Survivors include his wife Betty of Wellsburg; one daughter, Deb Starr of Wellsburg; three grandchildren, Scott, Chad and Allison Starr; two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Lucas Starr, three sisters, Grace (Mrs. Delbert) Hippen of Wellsburg, Esther (Mrs. Dale) Smith of Conrad and Marlys Clark of Keokuk; and one brother, Arnold Boekhoff (Delores) of Wellsburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents; eight sisters, Fannie, Anna, Jennie, Ella, Marie, Carrie, Lorine and Evelyn; and seven brothers, Ben, Dirk, Samuel, John Jr., Ernest, Albert and Lawrence.
