Rites For Sadie Behrends Held Here Thursday

Funeral services for Sadie Behrends were held January 16 at 1:30 p.m. at the Wellsburg Reformed Church. Pastor Roger Huitink was officiating clergyman.

Pastor and Mrs. Roger Huitink sang two selections accompanied by Marcella Neessen, organist. In charge of flowers were Mrs. Jake Engelkes and Alice Ruter.

Casket bearers were Frederick Junker, Gerry Grove, Tom Simms, Lawrence Bausman, Larry Bausman and Harry Duhn. The interment service was held in the Wellsburg Reformed Church cemetery.

Sadie Behrends passed away at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 14, at the Long Term Care Unit of the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center due to a heart condition. She reached the age of 77 years, 5 months and 4 days.

She was born in Shiloh township, south of Wellsburg, on August 10, 1908, the daughter of Henricks and Sandle (Murra) Behrends and received her education in the rural school in the area. She had always lived on the family farmstead south of Wellsburg until 1973 at which time she moved into Wellsburg to make her home. In 1984, she became a resident of the Long Term Care Unit.

Sadie was a long-time member of the Wellsburg Reformed Church, having joined by confession of faith on November 16, 1941.

Preceding her in death were her parents, 2 brothers, Henry and Will Behrends, and a half-brother, Ben Behrends.

Survivors include her son Edwin and wife, Hattie, of Wellsburg; 3 grandchildren, Glenn and Jan Behrends of Waverly; Galen and Terri Behrends of Holland; Jean Behrends of Marshalltown; 5 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Doyen Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
