KONKEN, ANDREESSEN, EIKLENBORG

Marlys Arlene Konken, age 84, of Aplington, was born February 23, 1926, the daughter of Fred and Remka (Andreessen) Eiklenborg on a farm between Stout and Dike in Grundy County, Iowa. She graduated from the Dike High School in 1944. Prior to marriage Marlys worked at Rath Packing in Waterloo, Iowa, the Stout Grocery Store and the Stout Post Office.

On February 23, 1951, Marlys was united in marriage with John Henry Konken at the Reformed Church of Stout in Stout, Iowa. To this union two children Randy and Myra were born. The couple lived with John’s parents for a short time until John entered the service. When he completed his duty and returned home they moved and farmed in Grundy County between Stout and Dike, where Marlys worked alongside John with much of the farm work. They moved to Stout in 1970 and started Konken Electric and Marlys did the bookkeeping for many years. John passed away in 1987. In 2006 Marlys moved to Parkersburg before she became a resident at Maple Manor Village in 2009.

Marlys was a faithful member of the Reformed Church of Stout where she had taught Sunday school and Bible School for many years, was a youth group leader and enjoyed being active in the Women’s Fellowship. In her spare time she enjoyed sewing clothes, gardening and canning.

Marlys died Tuesday, November 23, 2010, at the Maple Manor Village in Aplington, Iowa, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her husband, John on April 7, 1987; her parents; one sister, Vera DeGroote, and one brother, Harold Eiklenborg.

Marlys is survived by one son, Randy (Jill) Konken of Dike, Iowa; one daughter, Myra (Dennis) Aswegen of rural Parkersburg, Iowa; five grandchildren, Ross Aswegen, Sarah (Brad) Eiklenborg, Reed (Traci) Aswegen, Lindsey Konken and Mitch Konken; six great-grandchildren, Missy, Lexi, Britnie, Kelton, Liam and Max; one brother, Harvey (Carrie) Eiklenborg of Dike, Iowa; and one sister, Elma Stover of Urbandale, Iowa.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 27, 2010, at the Reformed Church of Stout with burial in Stout Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Parkersburg, and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church.
