John L. Aalfs Services Held

Jonathon Lane Aalfs, son of Jake and Angeline (Kuiper) Aalfs, was born May 2, 1950, in Eldora. He was baptized and confirmed at the Second Christian Reformed Church at Wellsburg. He attended the Wellsburg Public School where he graduated from high school in 1968.

On November 18, 1972, John was united in marriage to Sharon Harms at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at rural Wellsburg. Their marriage was blessed with one child, their daughter, Carie in 1978.

After graduating from high school, John worked at Peterson Road construction and then for a period of time at Krulls Service Station.

John was a truck driver for most of his working year. For 13 years he drove for American Freight of Eldora and for Sun Line Furniture also of Eldora. In 1987 the family moved to Coulter and John drove for Matson's of Albert Lea, MN. In 1990 he bought his own truck and pulled for Pro Trucking of Albert Lea.

John died tragically on the highway at Lumberton, NC, on Tuesday evening, September 24. In a heavy downpour of rain John tried to avoid the oncoming truck that had crossed over into his lane but there was not room enough to get by. He attained the age of 41 years, 4 months and 22 days.

He is survived by his wife Sharon and his daughter Carie. He is also survived by his father and mother, Jake and Angeline Aalfs, and by a brother, James of Conrad, and by two sisters, Judy Riebkes of Wellsburg and Janet Wieberdink of Minneapolis, MN. His sisters and brothers-in-law and his many nieces and nephews also mourn his passing.

Those preceding him in death include a brother, Joel and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Aalfs and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Kuiper.

John enjoyed family gatherings, camping, and attending functions relating to collecting Coco-Cola memorabilia. He also enjoyed school and 4-H activities involving his daughter Carie. Since moving to Coulter John has been a faithful member of Nazareth Lutheran church.

Funeral services were held on Friday, September 27, 1991, at 1:30 p.m. at Nazareth Lutheran at Coulter. Pastor Calvin Rick officiated. Organist was Mrs. Wendell Johansen. Soloist was Rev. Ervin Hesterberg.

Pall bearers were Jim Aalfs, Mike Furman, Darin Kruse, Richard Sanchez, Rick Aalfs, Mark Furman, Justin Cunningham, and Robert Cunningham. Honorary pall bearers were Tommy and Krista Sanchez, Megan Furman, Sarah Wieberdink, Mitchell Ray, Taylor Cunningham, Travis and Traci Furman, Jason and Jesse Furman, Christina and Nathan Cunningham, Mike Pohlman, Matt Pohlman, Nick Pohlman, and Casey and Lana Izer.

John was laid to rest at 4 p.m. in St Paul's Lutheran church Cemetery at Wellsburg. Pastor Richard Dowling was in charge of the committal service at the cemetery.
