Leola Beenken Services Held

Leola Evelyn Beenken was born May 6, 1916 on a farm near Waterloo to Irvin M. and Alice A. Dunfrod Krantz. She entered into eternal rest December 22 at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center of natural causes having attained the age of 75 years, 7 months and 18 days.

Leola was united in marriage to John Francis Beenken on October 3, 1938 in Waterloo. To this union 5 children were born: George E., Carol A., John (Jack) M., Donna M., and Elizabeth (Betty) J. Leola and John lived in Grundy Center where they owned and operated the George Beenken and Sons elevator for 40 years, retiring in 1981.

Leola was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Grundy Center, the Rosary Society, the Garden Club, the Grundy County Historical Society, the Hawkeye Valley Area Agency on Aging (HVAAA) and received in 1991 the Governor's Award for Volunteers.

Leola was preceded in death by her parents; husband John in 1980; infant daughter Donna in 1950; and two brothers.

She is survived by her children: George and wife Marilyn of Gilbertville, Carol (Mrs. Mike) Petersen of Reinbeck, John (Jack) and wife Arlene of Parkersburg, and Elizabeth (Betty) Beenken of Cedar Falls; brother Jim Krantz of Alliance, NE; four sisters, Arlene Loy of Cedar Falls; Mariam (Mrs. Bob) Arthur of Salem, OR; Ann Marie (Mrs. Ron) Adsitt of Oregon; and Dorothy (Mrs. Claude) Hemsath of Waterloo; 8 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, December 26 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Grundy Center with interment following in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. The Rev. Father Everett Frese will be leading the funeral mass. Pallbearers will be Jeff Beenken, Mike Beenken, Scott Schildroth, Brent Michel, Brett Byrnes, and Bryan Hoeg. Honorary Bearers are Howard Popes and Burgess Hawn. A rosary was held on Monday, December 23 at 7 p.m. with a vigil following at 7:30 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Grundy Center.

Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy enter was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
