Elsie Peters Services Held

Elsie Peters, 103, of Wellsburg, died Friday, December 24, at the Grundy County Hospital Long Term Care Unit of natural causes.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 28, at the Second Christian Reformed Church in Wellsburg at 1:30 p.m. Burial followed in Shiloh Township Cemetery in Wellsburg.

A memorial fund has been established.

Elsie was born on October 9, 1890, the daughter of John and Dorcas Tjaden who were early pioneers of Wellsburg. She was the third of seven children.

In 1908, she was united in marriage to Ben F. Peters. Ben was an auctioneer and realtor most of his life. Ben and Elsie had two children, a son, Glen and a daughter, Mrs. John T. (Norma) Riekena.

Elsie resided in Wellsburg all of her life until several years ago when she broke her hip and was moved to the Grundy County Hospital Long Term Care Center. She was a charter member of the Second Christian Reformed church of Wellsburg and very active in the community. Elsie played for the first girls basketball team fielded by Wellsburg and was an avid sports fan until her death.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben; son, Glen; daughter, Norma; 2 brothers, Meint and Odie Tjaden; 3 sisters, one in infancy, Annie Meyer, and Pearl Tjaden.

She is survived by 4 grandchildren, Donn Riekena of Minneapolis, MN, Mrs. Martin (Judith) Kasischke of Eldora, B. F. Peters of Marshalltown, and Mrs. Walter (Connie) Miller of Reinbeck; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Glen (Edith) Peters of Ackley; 1 sister, Minnie Dilly of Aplington; 9 great-grandchildren; 3 step-great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

The Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg was in charge of the arrangements.
