Funeral For Mrs. Ross Held Monday

Mrs. John (Lucy) Ross passed away Thursday afternoon, January 22, 1981, at the Doctor's Hospital in Sarasota, Florida, due to cancer. She had been in the hospital since January 2nd. She reached the age of 81 years, nine months and three days.

Funeral services were held Monday, January 26, 1981 at 1:30 p.m. at the Second Christian Reformed Church. Pastor John H. Elenbaas officiated at the services. Mrs. Harold Okones and Mrs. Ivan Slifer sang two selections. Mrs. Clarence Beecroft was organist. Flower attendants were Miss Genevieve Paterni and Mrs. Janet Williams. Pall bearers were Albert Huisman, William P. Riekena, Richard Ross, Kenneth Ross, Robert Willems, and James Willems. The interment service was held in the Shiloh Cemetery in Wellsburg. Doyen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Lucy was born on a farm in German Township, northwest of Wellsburg on April 19, 1899, the daughter of Gerhard and Antje (Roskamp) Willems. She attended the rural school in the area. On April 9, 1918, she was united in marriage to John W. Ross at the Eastfriesland Presbyterian Church Parsonage by Rev. F. Engelke. Following their marriage they made their home in Wellsburg and have lived there all of their married life.

She became a member of the Eastfriesland Presbyterian Church by confession of faith in 1915. In December of 1924 she became a member of the Second Christian Reformed Church by letter of transfer. She taught Sunday School for 35 years, was a member of the Willing Workers Society and was a member of the Helping Hands Society for a short time.

Preceding her in death were: her parents, three sisters and four brothers.

Those left to mourn her passing are: her husband, John W. Ross; two daughters, Mrs. Wilma King of Cedar Rapids and Mrs. Don (Evelyn) Purvis of Wellsburg; seven grandchildren, Linda Schmidt of Davenport, Bonnie Buchholtz of Kingsville, Texas, James Purvis of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Dean Purvis of Ft. Myers, Florida, Jean Puris of Iowa City, Katherine Anderson of Topeka, Kansas, Karen King of North Miami Beach, Florida; four great-grandchildren; three sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Maggie Beving of Wellsburg; Mrs. Hattie Schultz of Ackley, George Willems of Ackley, Mrs. Annie Jutting of Ackley, Jake Willems of Ackley; and many other relatives and friends.
