William Darwin Vint, 87, of Beaman, IA passed away Thursday, October 4, 2012, at Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center in Marshalltown. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, October 8, 2012, at the Beaman United Methodist Church, in Beaman. Visitation will be 2:00p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Sunday, October 7, 2012, at the Johnston Funeral Home in Conrad, IA. Interment will be at Oakland Cemetery, in Beaman.

Darwin was born January 15, 1925 to Emil and Grace (Raper) Vint on a farm north of Beaman. He graduated from Beaman High School in 1942. He then attended Iowa State University. In 1943 he volunteered for service in WWII, and was a togglier on twenty-seven B-17 bomber missions over Germany in 1944-45. Darwin returned from the service and married Marjorie Faye Brindle of Conrad on July 8, 1946. He farmed north of Beaman where they raised four children, and innumerable hogs, sheep, chickens, cattle, cats, and a few dogs over the years. He retired from farming in 1990, and he and Marjorie continued to live on the farm until the spring of 2009, when they move to Oak Estates in Conrad. Darwin was a member of the Beaman United Methodist Church and the American Legion. Over the years he had served as a 4-H leader and as a member of the Beaman Community Betterment Club, and was instrumental in getting a community grocery store started in Beaman. Darwin was a founding member of the BCLUW School Foundation, and served on the board of directors and as chairman of the board for Farmer’s Savings Bank. He loved the relative freedom of farm life, card games and coffee with life-long friends at the Beaman Tap, and he enjoyed playing (or even just hearing about) practical jokes. Darwin was entertained and disappointed on a yearly basis by the Chicago Cubs, and was also an enthusiastic Iowa State Cyclone fan. He rarely missed placing a bet on the Kentucky Derby.

Darwin is survived by wife Marjorie, two sons, Steve (Bettye) Vint, Alan Vint, two daughters, Jeannie (George) Macy, Jo (Charles) Bamford, two grandchildren, Justin (Susan) Macy, Andrea (Jon) Harcey, and two great grandchildren, Aurora and Lorelei. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Howard and Dean, and two sisters, Elizabeth and Avis in infancy.
