Brother of Joe and Frank Newell Dies At Marshalltown
James S. Newell, 806 West Main Street, Marshalltown, a pharmacist in that city for 32 years, died Tuesday evening at 8:48 at the Deaconess hospital, where he had been a patient since earlier in the day. He had been in poor health since the first of the year. Death was caused by a cerebral hemorrhage.
Mr. Newell was born Sept. 27, 1877, in Melrose township, Grundy county. He attended high school at Eldora and taught school in Grundy county for a few years. He then attended Grinnell college a year and completed a course in pharmacy at Iowa City. He lived at Waverly for a year and then went to Ackley where he was married, Oct. 6, 1908, to Miss Nettie Blake. They continued to live there for two years and then moved to Marshalltown.
He was employed at the Old Reliable Drug store here until Christmas of last year. He is survived by his widow, a daughter, Mrs. Vincent Blecker of Moline, Ill., and a son, Richard B. Newell of Pasadena, Calif., and by one grandchild, Kathryn Alice Blecker, Moline. He was one of 11 children and is survived by eight brothers and sisters, Mrs. George Blewett of Goldfield, Mrs. Charley Lillebridge of Rothay, Minn., Joe Newell of Grundy Center, Mrs. Ralph Reynolds of Des Moines, Miss Ella Newell of Long Beach, Calif., Mrs. A. C. Davidson of Nashua, Mrs. Maud Adams of Vinton and Frank Newell of Grundy Center.
The funeral was held Monday of this week at Marshalltown.
