W. Wickers was born in Osterhousen, Germany, June 29, 1865 as the only son of Berend and Elsie Wickers. He came to this country with his parents at the age of two years. They resided in Illinois for two years and from there they came to Iowa and resided in Grundy county up to the time of his death, which took place December 19, 1921 at his home two miles north of Fern. He was united in marriage to Miss Delia Agena in 1877[sic]. This union was blessed with six children, 3 sons and 3 daughters, one daughter having preceded him in death at the age of eleven months. Those left to mourn his sad departure are his wife, his five children, Ella, Ben, Annie, Emil and Henry, all at home, and two sisters, Mrs. J. Dirks and Mrs. J. H. Peterson, both of Stout, his parents and one sister, Mrs. Henry Hessinius having preceded him in death. The deceased reached the age of 56 years, 5 moths and 20 days. He died of a cancer and suffered intensely, death coming as a great relief. The funeral was held at Stout Reformed church by Rev. Siemsen's, December 22, 1921. A large crowd attended the funeral to pay a last tribute to the deceased. He was of a quiet disposition, trying to keep peace with everyone.
