Funeral services were held Friday afternoon, July 29, 1955 at 1:00 p.m. at the John Doyen home and later at the Pleasant Valley Evangelical United Brethren church northeast of Wellsburg for Mrs. Luke J. Groninga, wife of the Wellsburg mayor, who died Wednesday morning at 2:30 a.m. at the Grundy County Memorial hospital at the age of 59 years, 11 months and 8 days. Rev. A. K. Henning officiated at the services. Interment was made in the Shiloh cemetery.
Mrs. Grace Mathilda Groninga was born on August 19, 1895 in Pleasant Valley township to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Getting. In 1908 she moved to Parkersburg with her parents. She was united in holy wedlock to Luke J. Groninga on February 17, 1920. The couple lived in Parkersburg until the spring of 1931. They lived at Stewartville, Minnesota two years and returned to the farm in Pleasant Valley township in 1933. For the past three years Mr. and Mrs. Groninga had resided in Wellsburg.
Besides her husband the deceased is survived by 3 children, Mrs. Irma Elaine Lutterman of Wellsburg; Durwood Harlan Groninga of St. Paul, Minnesota and Virgil Charles Groninga of Wellsburg. Besides her husband and the afore mentioned children there remain to mourn her death seven grandchildren and other relatives, and a host of friends.
Mrs. Groninga was a genuine Christian and was a member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church. By her fine Christian character she made many friends. She was a faithful companion to her husband and a loving mother. Throughout her long illness she was a patient sufferer. She will be long remembered and missed very much by all those who knew her.
Preceding the deceased in death were her parents and one granddaughter.
