GRANDMA HARRENSTEIN JOINS RANKS OF THE DEPARTED PIONEERS
SUCCUMBS TO AGE AT 83-FUNERAL SERVICES WERE HELD MONDAY
The death roll of Grundy County's stalwart pioneers becomes increasingly larger as they complete their work among the mortals and ascend to their well-earned reward. This week Mrs. Herman Harrenstein Sr. becomes a loving memory to those many friends and relatives who have watched her progress the span of life.
On Friday, June 20, 1930 at the age of 83 years, 6 months and 8 days Mrs. Harrenstein succumbed to the weakness of her years.
Funeral services were held Monday at 1:00 p.m. at the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church with Rev. Drake conducting the services assisted by Rev. C. Heinrich. Interment was in the Drake cemetery. The pallbearers were John Maas, Ben Jaspers, William Koch, John Harms, John Finke, Charles Etjen.
The deceased is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Jacob (Jennie) Rindels of Wellsburg, Mrs. Henry (Annie) Gronewold of Grundy Center and three sons, Claus, near Wellsburg, Herman of Wellsburg, and Albertus on the home place northeast of Wellsburg. Also by forty-one grandchildren and thirty great-grandchildren, and two sisters. She was preceded in death by sons Ben, Omke, Jacob, infant Albertus, infant.
Mrs. Aaltje (Aje) Oemke Harrenstein, nee Hettinga, daughter of Oemke Berend and Jantje Niklassen Kramer Van Hettinga was born December 12, 1846 in Pilsum, Netherlands. She came to America with her parents and settled at Forreston, Illinois, where she married Herman Harrenstein in 1870, moving to Grundy County in 1884, settling northeast of Wellsburg. Her husband died in 1926. The union was blessed with ten children, five of whom preceded her in death.
