Homer Lee Aiken, 73, died of respiratory failure on Monday, October 10, at the Doctor's Medical Center in Modesto, CA, where he had been hospitalized since the previous week.
Memorial services were held on Thursday, October 13, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Modesto, where he was a member.
Funeral services were held at the Doyen-Abels Funeral Home, Wellsburg, on Saturday, October 15, at 1:30 p.m. The Rev. Charles Kooger of the Second Christian Reformed Church officiated.
Roger Holeman sang "Saved By Grave". He was accompanied by Mrs. LuRay Neessen, who also played selected numbers for the prelude and postlude.
Casket bearers were Herman Groote, Paul Holeman, Rolly Aiken, Roger Holeman, Sheldon Groote, and Virgil Byl.
Interment was in the Shiloh Cemetery, Wellsburg.
Homer Lee Aiken was born in Lincoln township, Grundy county, on Dec. 20, 1914, the son of Rolly O. and Vida Fern Crouse Aiken. He graduated from Grundy Center High School in 1932. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in March, 1941, and received training as a machinist, spending time at various Air Bases. During WWII, he was stationed in places in the South Pacific. He was discharged in March, 1947, after which he attended an Electrical Technical School in Chicago, taking heating and air-conditioning. He later worked in Quality Control for the Boeing Airplane Co. for 30 years, and retired in Jan., 1980.
He was married to the former Doris Beecroft on March 18, 1959.
When living in Rapid City, SD, he worked closely with the minister in helping with the establishment of the Christian Reformed Church there. He also served as Elder in the Christian Reformed Churches at Spokane and Lynnwood, WA.
Homer was preceded in death by his parents.
Besides his wife, Doris, he is survived by two brothers, Harold, of Monticello, AZ, and Rolly, of Big Rock, IL; and five sisters, Marjorie Holeman, of Waterloo, Mildred Morrison, of Nuevo, CA, Miriam Henry, of Grand Island, NE, Marillyn Akkerman, of Palm Dessert, CA, and Myrna Woods, of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
