Mrs. Martha Wardle died at her home in Mt. Vernon last week. She was born in Folkingham, Lincolnshire, England, in 1812, and came to this country ten years later. The family moved to Lockport, Ill., where she married John Wardle, June 16, 1858.

After four years of married life they moved to Grundy county where they resided for twenty-five years. Six daughters and one son were born to this couple and no tie of the family was broken for twenty-five years, then in the winter of 1885 the beloved father was called home. Shortly after his death the family moved to Mt. Vernon where the children might have the advantage of school and college.

The deceased exhibited those christian graces which revealed that depth of character which is the product of God's spirit in life. She was a member of the M. E. church and contributed her full share in building up that organization in Grundy Center. During her last hours all her children were at her bedside except Mrs. Mattie Dixon who could not be present.

--The Grundy County Republican (Grundy Center, Iowa), 9 December 1897
